Why Horolume
Fewer Shortcuts. More Answers.
This page explains what sets our approach apart from a standard battery-and-back service — and why that difference matters for the long-term health of a watch.

What You Get at Horolume
Written Condition Note
A plain-language document listing findings, completed work, and scope of our workmanship coverage.
Grade-Correct Lubrication
The right oil at the right viscosity for each friction point in the movement — not one oil for everything.
Water Resistance Tested
After every quartz service, we pressure-test to the case rating. A watch only leaves when it passes.
Six-Position Timing Report
Mechanical calibres are regulated and the results handed to you in a readable timing report on collection.
Photography Included
Movement servicing and restoration projects include before-and-after photographs as standard.
No Work Without Agreement
For restoration, nothing is refinished until you have read and confirmed the written proposal.
Watchmaking Experience, Not Assembly-Line Speed
Our head watchmaker has spent more than two decades on Swiss and Japanese calibres across a range of brands and complications. Experience of that kind means problems are identified before parts are ordered, and solutions are proportionate to what the movement actually needs.
We do not operate on a fixed-time service model where everything gets the same treatment regardless of condition. A movement in reasonable health gets what it needs. One with worn components gets a clear explanation of what is worn and what addressing it would involve.
What This Means Practically
- Calibre identified and documented at intake
- Wear assessed before any scope is confirmed
- Service history noted and forwarded in the condition document
- Work carried out only to agreed scope
Tools We Use
- Multi-position timing machine (amplitude, beat error, daily rate)
- Ultrasonic cleaning system with horological solution
- Pneumatic water resistance tester
- 10× and 30× bench microscopy for inspection
Instruments That Give Readable Data
Workshop tools matter most when they produce results you can hand to the owner. The timing machine output we share is not a pass/fail sticker — it is a table of amplitude readings and beat error values across six positions, which tells you how the movement performs in the positions you actually wear it.
Water resistance testing uses a calibrated pneumatic system, not an immersion guess. The reading is specific and recorded, and it forms part of the condition note for every quartz service.
One Point of Contact, Plain Language Throughout
When you contact Horolume, you reach the workshop directly. There is no call centre routing your enquiry to a technician you will never speak to. Questions about the service are answered by the person doing the work.
We reply to enquiries within one working day. For restoration projects, we send the proposal by email so you can read it at your own pace and come back with questions before committing to anything.
Service Approach
- Direct communication with the watchmaker
- Reply within one working day
- Progress updates on long-form projects
- Collection appointment arranged at your convenience
Pricing Breakdown
All prices are for one watch. No call-out, no assessment fee. Parts additional only where specified in scope.
Pricing That Reflects What the Work Actually Is
We publish our service prices openly and do not add scope after intake without discussion. The price you read on this site is what you will be quoted, adjusted only if the inspection reveals something material that changes the scope — in which case we tell you before proceeding.
There is no initial assessment charge. You can bring your watch in, hear what we find, and decide without obligation.
Work You Can Verify
The timing report we hand over at collection shows you how the movement performs against its manufacturer specification. You do not have to take our word for the regulation — the numbers are there.
Similarly, the water resistance test result is printed on the condition note. You leave knowing the watch is actually water-resistant to its stated depth, not water-resistant in the sense that we changed the gaskets and hoped for the best.
Documentation You Receive
- Condition note (all services)
- Timing report with amplitude and beat error (mechanical)
- Water resistance test result (quartz)
- Before-and-after photographs (mechanical and restoration)
- Printed restoration record (vintage work)

What Sets Us Apart
Distinctive Features of the Horolume Bench
The Proposal-First Model for Restoration
Before any surface on a vintage piece is touched, the watchmaker writes a proposal and photographs the current state. You read it, ask questions, and decide exactly what is done. This is standard practice at Horolume, not an option for premium work.
Patina Preserved by Default
We do not assume that older watches should be returned to a showroom shine. Original case surfaces are left as found unless the owner specifies otherwise. Over-polishing a vintage piece is, in our view, damage — not improvement.
A Service Record That Travels With the Watch
The documentation we produce can be filed with the watch's box and papers, or stored digitally. The next owner, or the next watchmaker, will have a clear account of what was done and when — which adds to the piece's history rather than obscuring it.
Honest Timelines, Not Optimistic Ones
We quote turnaround ranges based on how long the work actually takes, not how quickly we think you want to hear it will be done. If parts availability changes the timeline, we contact you promptly rather than letting the collection date pass in silence.
