From the People Who Brought Watches In

RH

Razif Hashim

Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

I brought in a Seiko SKX that had been sitting in a drawer for three years. The watchmaker looked at it, wrote down exactly what he found, and called me before doing anything extra. The condition note they handed back with the watch is something I have kept with the box — it tells the full story of the service in plain language. Watch is running within two seconds a day now.

Had the battery and gaskets done on my everyday Tissot. Turnaround was four days, which is exactly what they quoted. They tested the water resistance after and showed me the reading on the slip they put in the box. I have used battery services elsewhere where this step was skipped entirely. Good to see it done properly.

My father's vintage Omega Seamaster needed more than just a service — the case had seen better decades. Zulkifli sent me a written proposal with photos before touching anything. We agreed to refinish the case but keep the original dial patina. The result looks considered rather than over-restored. Worth the eight weeks and every ringgit.

The communication is what I noticed most. I asked a few questions by email before bringing the watch in and got detailed replies from the watchmaker himself, not a template response. The service took a week longer than initially scoped because of a part, but they told me before the original date rather than after. That kind of transparency is not always a given.

Quick and thorough quartz service on my Citizen. They identified that the crown gasket was in worse shape than the caseback one, which was not something I would have caught. Walked out with a watch I trust to swim with again, and a slip of paper that tells me exactly what was done. Simple job, handled properly.

I brought in a 1960s Longines that had been in the family since my grandfather bought it new. The restoration proposal was thorough — photos of every worn area, a clear explanation of what could be done and what the risks were of doing nothing. They were honest that the bracelet might not match perfectly after stretch correction. It did not. But the watch wears well and the record they gave me documents its state faithfully.

Case Studies

Three Watches, Three Situations

Case 01 · Mechanical Servicing

Situation

A daily-wear automatic from a well-known Swiss maker was running 35 seconds slow per day. The owner had worn it continuously for six years without any service and noticed the power reserve was shorter than it used to be.

What We Did

Full disassembly, ultrasonic clean, and inspection revealed that the mainspring had not failed but the barrel wall was dry. The escapement parts were within tolerance. Re-lubrication and regulation across six positions followed.

Outcome

Watch regulated to +3 seconds per day in crown-up, the position most relevant to that particular calibre's daily use. Power reserve returned to the manufacturer's stated range. Total bench time: 5 weeks.

"The timing report was the thing that surprised me. I could see the numbers across all six positions and understand why the regulation they chose made sense for how I actually wear it."

— K.L., Ampang

Case 02 · Vintage Restoration

Situation

A 1970s Japanese manual-wind watch with significant case scratches, a cracked acrylic crystal, and lume that had turned from cream to an uneven brown. The owner wanted to wear it but was unsure what restoration would involve.

What We Did

Sent a written proposal covering crystal replacement, selective case finishing on the top surfaces only (leaving the lugs original at the owner's request), and lume refresh in a warm tone appropriate to the era. The movement was also serviced as part of the project.

Outcome

Case surfaces cleaned and selectively refinished. New acrylic crystal. Lume refreshed to a warm Swiss superluminova in the original period tone. Movement running to specification. Printed record of every renewed component filed with the watch. Total bench time: 10 weeks.

"I was nervous about having the lugs polished — they had their own character. Glad we agreed to leave them. The watch looks like it has a history, not like it just left the shop floor."

— T.W., Subang Jaya

Case 03 · Quartz Care

Situation

A diver rated to 200m had been used in open water for two seasons without a gasket check. The owner noticed the battery indicator had come on and asked about the gaskets at the same time.

What We Did

Battery replaced with correct cell type. Caseback and crown gaskets both renewed — the crown gasket showed compression set from extended use. Water resistance tested to the stated 200m rating using pneumatic equipment. Case ultrasonically cleaned.

Outcome

Watch passed the water resistance test. Condition note issued with the pressure test result included. The owner received a document confirming the watch was suitable for its intended use. Bench time: 3 working days.

"The fact that they test and document the water resistance rather than just changing the gaskets and handing it back is exactly why I drove from PJ to come here."

— F.A., Petaling Jaya
